Inspiring the Next Generation
The construction industry is evolving rapidly, and building a sustainable future workforce starts with inspiring young minds early. That is why the Alpha team was thrilled to head to West Nottinghamshire College’s construction campus in Kirkby-in-Ashfield for their annual ‘Get into Construction’ interactive careers day.
The event welcomed around 150 Year 10 pupils from ten different schools across the region. Swapping their standard school timetables for hands-on, practical workshops, these students spent the day exploring the diverse, rewarding pathways available across civil engineering and the built environment.
Hands-On Engineering: The Alpha Tetrahedron Challenge
Representing Alpha Construction Ltd, our Operations Director, Robin Denton, led an interactive workshop designed to challenge the students’ teamwork, collaboration, and structural thinking.
We tasked groups of students with a tetrahedron-building challenge. While it was a fun, fast-paced exercise, it introduced the pupils to core engineering principles: load distribution, spatial awareness, and structural integrity.
“It was fantastic to see how quickly the students grasped the concepts and started working together to solve problems,” said Robin Denton. “Events like this are crucial because they pull back the curtain on our industry. Construction isn’t just about one specific skill; it’s about collaborative engineering, problem-solving, and teamwork. Showing young people what’s possible at this age is how we spark the careers of tomorrow.”
A Wide World of Opportunities
The college’s specialised campus was buzzing with activity all day. Alongside Alpha’s structural engineering challenges, the students got a taste of the vast breadth of the sector through a variety of workshops led by college tutors and fellow industry leaders, including:
- Traditional Trades: Trying their hand at plastering, painting and decorating, plumbing pipe networks, and assembling electrical circuits.
- On-Site Technology: Learning how a digital theodolite works for site management and accurate surveying.
- Design & Quantity Surveying: Navigating real project blueprints and designing structural scale models.
- Highways & Infrastructure: Exploring the diverse career pathways that keep the country moving, from highway construction to surveying.
Building for Tomorrow
At Alpha, we know that bridging the skills gap requires proactive engagement. By giving school leavers a tangible, real-world introduction to construction, we can help them see a clear, exciting pathway into professional apprenticeships and technical careers.
