Port Penrhyn – Jetty, North Wales

Client/end user: National Grid & Dickies Boat Yard

Scope: Alpha works initially involved the removal of an existing ramp and jetty from the Dickies Boatyard in Bangor, North Wales.
The steel encased piles were to be left in situ for possible reuse.
The works involved the careful management of falls from height off the quayside, tidal flows in the dock and movement of dock traffic. To provide protection and access, handrailing and fencing was used on the quayside with a floating pontoon temporarily installed to facilitate the works.

On completion of the demolition works, testing was undertaken by Alpha to determine future safe loadings capacity. The results were such that the owner of the boatyard commissioned a design to provide a boatlift pier in place of the old jetty. Alpha assisted with developing the design to provide an intrinsic temporary works system for the concrete shuttering. Other works involved miscellaneous steelwork for access, fender tracks and provision of permanent pontoon.
