Devonport – Building Refurbishment

For: HMNB Devonport

Client/end user: Torishima/Babcock International

Scope: The scope of works was the upgrading and refurbishment of the existing boiler house at Devonport Docks. The boiler house main function was to provide hot water and steam for heating & services throughout the dockyard. Torishima were to remove/strip out the existing boilers and ancillary equipment and install new boilers, equipment and controls once the civils work was complete.

The civils work was to remove the cladding from the gable end of the boiler house and amend the structural steel frame to allow the installation of two larger roller shutter doors. New cladding and louvres were installed to the gable end and side elevations, with high level louvers installed at roof level to improve air flow and ventilation. Internal civil works included extensions to the boiler plinths, amendments to service trenches and the demolition of equipment plinths and small block-work office.
External works included the demolition of an existing reinforced concrete/brick clad diesel tank bund and the surface area rein-stated in tarmac.

Unusual aspects: In-situ amendments to existing gable end structural steel frame to allow for proposed roller shutter doors
Dealing with a high water table and running sand within excavations.
