Project Complexities, simplified by Alpha:
- Severely contaminated ground conditions, including asbestos and chromate, requiring controlled excavation, safe handling procedures and compliant disposal to enable safe development of the site. Careful management was essential to protect workforce safety, prevent environmental harm and ensure full regulatory compliance without programme delay.
- Simultaneous compliance with three separate technical specifications (Northern Power Grid, EDF and National Grid), requiring careful coordination and reconciliation of differing requirements. Aligning multiple standards reduced ambiguity, avoided rework and ensured the completed facility satisfied all stakeholder expectations.
- Integration of multiple building typologies and HV infrastructure within a single live project environment, ensuring alignment between civil, structural and electrical elements. Precise coordination was critical to prevent interface clashes and to deliver a cohesive, operationally reliable substation.
Scope of Works:
- Extensive groundworks and remediation, preparing the brownfield site for safe construction and long-term asset performance, transforming contaminated land into a stable and compliant development platform.
- Construction of two control buildings, providing secure, fully serviced operational hubs tailored to differing end-user specifications.
- Northern Power Grid Control Building with reinforced concrete foundations, block/brick superstructure, composite roof and internal finishes.
- EDF Control Building with steel frame, composite cladding, internal blockwork and full internal fit-out including welfare facilities.
- Construction of equipment foundations, ducting and earthing systems, supporting high-voltage transformers and associated infrastructure, forming the structural and electrical backbone of the substation.
- Installation of oil containment drainage, including separator and penstock chambers, mitigating environmental risk in the event of transformer oil discharge.
- Surface water drainage system, incorporating a pumping station and connection to the mains sewer network, ensuring effective water management and flood resilience.
- Perimeter electrified palisade fencing, delivering compliant security for critical energy infrastructure.
- Piled retaining wall to existing ditch, stabilising boundaries and managing site level changes.
- External lighting scheme and full site finishes, including paths, tarmac roads and gravel surfacing, completing a safe, durable and fully operational compound.
