Project complexities, simplified by Alpha:
- Delivering flood defence works within a live 400kV substation, requiring strict phasing, coordination and safety controls to maintain uninterrupted operation.
- Managing very high groundwater levels, requiring careful planning of excavation and drainage works to maintain stability and ensure safe construction.
- Maintaining site security at all times, including phased removal and replacement of perimeter fencing without compromising operational integrity.
- Working within environmentally sensitive conditions, including protection of local wildlife such as newts, toads and a nearby beaver colony, requiring ecological controls and compliance.
- Integrating extensive drainage and pumping systems, ensuring long-term flood resilience and protection of critical infrastructure.
Scope of Works:
- Phased removal and replacement of existing perimeter fencing, maintaining security throughout the works.
- Construction of approximately 1050m of fibre-reinforced concrete flood wall, providing long-term protection to the substation.
- Installation of high-security electrified weldmesh fencing, integrated with the flood defence system.
- Installation of 4 No. flood gates, maintaining controlled access and egress to the site.
- Upgrade of internal drainage systems, including installation of 13 No. groundwater pumping stations to manage flood conditions and protect critical equipment.
- Installation of flood-proof doors to control buildings, safeguarding essential operational infrastructure.
- Modification of access roads and site lighting, ensuring safe and continued operation of the facility.
